UK (Glasgow Caledonian University) Planned strike action – Glasgow

The University has received formal notification that some trade unions have identified days for strike action at GCU.  The dates are Monday 21, Tuesday 22 November and then again on Thursday 24, Friday 25 and the following Wednesday 30 November. This means that some academic and professional services staff are likely to take strike action.

While the University respects the rights of its staff to take such action, we do expect some disruption. However, we are making every effort to keep this to a minimum in terms of the impact on student learning and the availability of campus facilities.  All campus facilities including the Library, canteens, Student Services, IT and the Arc will be open, although some services will be limited. The Students’ Association remains open as normal.

Although the University will not know any specific details in advance about strike action taken locally, you may already have been made aware of possible cancellations to your classes and laboratory sessions.  If you have a pre-booked appointment planned with anyone in Student Services or the Library, please check with that area in advance of that time.

What is strike action?

Strike action is when staff refuse to work for a defined period. At universities, this includes not doing any work-related activity, such as teaching students, marking coursework, attending meetings, sending emails related to work and carrying out administrative tasks. It also includes not preparing for work scheduled after the member returns from strike.

Striking staff may create a picket line by standing outside their workplace to tell people why they are taking part in industrial action and ask them not to cross the line.
