As one of China’s first National Language Promotion Bases, JNU is working to popularize Mandarin (Putonghua, based on the Beijing dialect). With a commitment to promoting China’s standard language and spreading it overseas, JNU has taken concrete steps based on the theme of Putonghua Promotion Week.

During the 25th National Putonghua Promotion Week from Sept. 12 to 18, the completion ceremony of the National Standard Language Proficiency Training Program for teachers from Debao County, Guangxi, aided by JNU, was held in the College of Chinese Language and Culture. JNU’s National Language Promotion Base connected to the Education Bureau of Debao, gathering experts and 100 trainee teachers from.

Since June, the nearly three months of online training has improved the level and ability of front-line teachers in Debao to carry out education and teaching activities in Putonghua. The training has also solidified the achievements of poverty alleviation and rural revitalization in the county.

JNU also launched the 2022 Chinese to Eyes Short Video Creation Competition. The competition takes the Chinese encountered in daily life as the entry point to demonstrate the cultural integration, historical changes and local customs behind those Chinese characters. In February, JNU launched the second phase of the contest My Hometown Is a Treasure, inviting faculty members and students from the college to submit short videos on traditional festivals, red culture and events related to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. At the end of July, JNU launched the third phase of this contest, focusing on the natural and human beauty of contestants’ hometowns.

Facilitated by the characteristics and advantages of the promotion base, JNU is further developing short videos on classic recitation and language arts training for Chinese-speaking communities overseas and language schools, spreading classic Chinese culture around the world.
