Ghana (University of Mines and Technology) UMaT Participates In 27th GUSA Games
The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) is among teams drawn from the public universities for the 27th GUSA games ongoing at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi. The games, which started on 4th November, 2022 will end on 19th November, 2022. The universities are competing in various sporting disciplines including, football, handball, volley ball, basketball, athletics, beach volley ball and hockey under the theme ‘Harnessing sporting talents of students for national development through healthy competition using science and Technology’.
Opening the programme on Monday, 7th November, 2022, the Council Chairman of KNUST, Ambassador Nana Effah Appenteng, who represented the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II as the Special Guest of Honour, underscored the importance of sports to national development and urged the participating teams to see sports as an opportunity for employment. He then called for free and fair officiating and good sportsmanship so that talents would be harnessed for the benefit of the country.
The Vice Chancellor of KNUST, Professor Mrs Rita Akosua Dickson expressed her satisfaction with the organisation of the event and commended the Local Organising Committee under the chairmanship of the Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor Ellis Owusu-Dabo for their hard work to make the programme a success. She then encouraged participating teams to give up their best to make their universities proud.
The opening ceremony was marked with a guard of honour parade by KNUST Cadet and a special GUSA and institutional flag raising ceremony. Students of the KNUST Basic Schools also put up splendid cultural performances with the purpose of igniting the playing of traditional games such as ‘ampe, chaskele, stay,’ and many others.
Present at the opening ceremony were the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon Simon Osei Mensah, Chairman of Vice Chancellors Ghana, Professor Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo and Associate Professor Solomon Nunoo, who represented the Vice Chancellor of UMaT, Professor Richard Kwasi Amankwah. Prior to the formal opening, the Registrar, M.K. Okrah called on the football team during their preparations for their first match to motivate them. The UMaT Team was led by Dr Abdul Fatao, the University Sports Officer.
