University of Giessen (Germany) JLU concerned about situation in Iran

Solidarity with Iranian university members who stand up for freedom and human rights – Demonstration on 30 November 2022 in front of the main building of JLU

JLU is very concerned about the situation in Iran and the increasingly harsh state repression against students and other university members who stand up for freedom and human rights. JLU fully endorses the respective statements of the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and condemns the violent crackdown on peaceful demonstrations. JLU also declares its solidarity with Iranian citizens, especially with the members of Iranian universities, in its commitment to human rights and expressly also the rights of women and appeals to all those involved to refrain from violence.

The protests were triggered by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini about two weeks ago. She had been arrested for her allegedly “un-Islamic” clothing, fell into a coma in police custody under unexplained circumstances and died in a hospital on September 16, 2022. Against this background, the Executive Board of JLU supports the worldwide “Campus Rally for Iran” of the Iranian Scholars for Liberty on November 30, 2022. There will be a rally in front of the main JLU building at 2 p.m.
