Ghana (University of Education Winneba) UEW dominating 2022 GUSA games

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has leapfrogged 13 other public universities in Ghana, to cement its position at the summit of the medal table for the 27th edition of the ongoing Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) games.

The games are being hosted by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi.

As of 17th November, 2022, UEW had hauled a total of 60 medals made of 22 gold, 22 silver and 16 bronze medals respectively.

The university’s total medal haulage puts it in strong contention as a run away over all winner of the ongoing 27th edition of the games. The university is beating off competition from its nearest rival, the University of Cape Coast (UCC), who have garned 39 medals so far. The UCC have dominated the games over the last 10 years or so.

The 18-day games offers opportunity to students to develop their talents in sporting disciplines including football, athletics, volleyball, hockey, handball; basketball; netball; goalball; badminton; table tennis; tennis, beach volleyball among others. It started on 4th November and will end on 21st November, 2022.

The 14 participating institutions in this year’s games are the host institution Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Education -Winneba (UEW), University of Ghana (UG), Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), University for Development Studies (UDS) and the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD UBIDS).

The other schools are University of Cape Coast (UCC), University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA), Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), University of Mines and Technology (UMAT), Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) and C. K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS).

It would be recalled that UEW emerged the second overall best institution at the immediate past GUSA Games held in 2020 at the University of Ghana, Legon.
