UK (London Metropolitan University) London Met graduate awarded Royal Photographic Society Women in Photography Bursary
London Met graduate Mina Boromond has been awarded the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) Women in Photography Bursary, which has been made possible through the generous support of Karen Knorr, HonFRPS.
The RPS Women in Photography Group’s objective is to facilitate the celebration, education and collaboration of female and female identifying photographers.
Mina, who graduated with a first-class Photography BA in 2021, said: “I am a creative person without the ability to visualise, named aphantasia. I am also a storyteller who has a lot to share with the aid of a different medium. I enjoy experimenting and developing my ideas – art is my playground.”
The Iranian-born, London-based artist decided to explore the lack of visual imagery in her mind through photography, soon realising that, rather than inhibiting her creativity, the condition enhanced it. Boromand’s images represent the emotional attachment she has to her memories, expressing her experience of displacement.
She adds physical layers to photographic prints as a way to connect with her memories; a means of reconstructing the time and space that separates her from the past.
Last year, she was one of just four students nationwide selected to exhibit her work at the Carte Blanche Student Awards 2021, and earlier this year exhibited her work in an exhibition organised by Silk Road Gallery in Tehran.
