Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) is a national public institution, the oldest institution of higher education in Mozambique. It was founded on August 21, 1962, by Decree-Law No. 44530, under the designation of General University Studies of Mozambique. In 1968, it ascended to the category of University, then designated the University of Lourenço Marques. On May 1, 1976, President Samora Moisés Machel named this institution Eduardo Mondlane University, in honor of the important historical role represented in Mozambique by Doctor Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane. It is also in his honor that June 20, the date of his birth, is celebrated as Eduardo Mondlane University Day.
