Description
The Universidad Austral de Chile is a traditional Chilean private university , based in the southern city of Valdivia , Chile . It was founded in 1954 , obtaining legal personality through Supreme Decree No. 3757, of September 7 of the same year, in response to the urgent need to have a university higher education institution in the south of the country.
The University develops many of its academic activities at the Isla Teja (46.2 ha) and Miraflores (32.1 ha) campuses, both located in the city of Valdivia , at the Puerto Montt campus (5.95 ha), in the Clinical Field of Osoro , in the Trapananda Center in Coyhaique and in various research centers and experimental premises belonging to this house of studies located from the Region of La Araucanía to the Region of Aysén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo , in addition to its 126 laboratories distributed in all its campuses and a network of six libraries with 220,234 written volumes and 409,151 virtual books, among other resources.
It is currently accredited by the National Accreditation Commission (CNA-Chile) for a period of 6 years (out of a maximum of 7), from November 2015 to November 2021. It appears in position 6 within Chilean universities according to the CSIC webometric classification (July 2020). It is also in position 6 according to the AméricaEconomía 2016 ranking. Among Chilean universities, it is also among the 11 that appear in the QS 2020 World University Ranking, among the 10 that appear in the ranking of the Times Higher Education 2020. And among the 25 that appear in the Scimago Institution Rankings (SIR) 2020 ranking, with position 8 nationally and 666 worldwide.
